Something to Think about Today…
Below are four quotes that have really given me a different perspective on a lot of things in my life. While I know quotes are just words, I believe there are statements that can really shift your mindset and give you a kick in the butt to make change. While I am not here to be a cheerleader, I want to pass these four quotes on in hopes that someone else finds one of them useful.
- “Success is the fulfillment of potential.” This is my favorite quote and probably will be for well into the future. To me there is no better way to describe success. If you define success as the fulfillment of potential, you are able to translate that to a meaningful specific definition to whatever part of your life is important to you. What is your potential as a parent, working professional, communicator, community leader, volunteer, son/daughter, etc. and where are you right now in reaching that potential? If your definition of success now is making a lot of money, you can apply that to the idea that success is the fulfillment of potential. If you want to make a lot of money then you need to figure out what areas of life you need to reach you potential in to do so. Earning money basically boils down to creating value for others, but what areas of your life or attributes can you improve on to better create value for others? Take the safety field for example, some key things you may need to excel in the field is communication abilities, leadership skills, and technical knowledge. Being self-aware to know where you stand in relation to your true potential in these areas will allow to begin to take steps to actively look to improve in these areas. Once you begin to reach your potential in these areas it will translate into a bigger earning potential or that next promotion.
- “At some point your environment reflects you.” I heard this a few years ago during a Toastmaster’s speech. The speaker was discussing that he disagreed with the saying “you are a reflection of your environment”. His argument was that we are adults and where we are today are because of the choices WE have made. From who your spouse is, what career you are in, what company you work for, where you live, etc. are all because of choices you have made. Sure, your upbringing has a lot to do with who you are, but you are not stuck in any situation. You have the power to change 98% of everything in your life. Most people want to blame their parents or their upbringing, but the reality is you have the power now to change your life. If you in a minimum wage job and living with 4 roommates that you hate and you dread waking up then change it. We live in a world of opportunities today. You can literally do anything you want for work nowadays. Don’t think you have to go to college or trade school to get there. Get your foot in the door to whatever interests you and then work your way up or begin to get training that will get you to where you want to be.
- “Do not be a taxi driver in an Uber era.” What I mean with this quote is do not rely on skills, a job, or company that is becoming outdated. Never find yourself behind the curve of new and developing technologies or knowledge. This is especially true if you are in a field that is dying- like driving a taxi. Always try to stay up to date with up and coming tools in knowledge in your field. Staying in touch with technology and new trends in the world overall is important. If you are able to align yourself early with a new tool or career field that is starting to gain popularity you will be able to secure some job security. No one cares what you did twenty years ago in a dying field. Companies are interested that you have relevant and up to date skills that can forward whatever their mission is. Find the trends of pain points in whatever field you want to get into and learn the skills necessary to fill the gap. Do not become the pain point by not progressing.
- “Why not me?” I cannot remember where I heard this quote from, but it is great. Why not me (?) is a question you need to ask yourself when you see someone else achieving their goals or goals you want to achieve. Why can’t it be you in that situation or earning that promotion? We all deserve to reach our goals if we are willing to put in the work. It is important to realize that we are able to work hard and succeed at almost anything we want to. You just need to be focused, work hard, and make calculated moves towards where you want to end up. If you are reading this then you are most likely in a developed free country where you have access to an endless amount of information and opportunities. Do not take it for granted. Many people wake up around the world and their only aspirations are to find food and not die that day. You really hit the lottery if you were born in a country like the U.S., Canada, or the UK. Remind yourself every day. I know there are times I need to take a step back and look at the blessings I have. I find that many times people who are twenty or thirty years into their career look at younger individuals who are in the same field and have the arrogance to think that these young people will never be at the same level as he/she is. Counting people out is a sad mistake. You never who anyone is going to be and regardless of that fact you as a person of a higher level of success should want to mentor and help others to achieve their goals. Good things come to those who help others out. The only way this website is possible is because others have shared their knowledge about website building and SEO online which allowed me to learn how to do it. Larger blogs have posted my site on theirs which has helped increase my audience. I always try to help others out when I can.
Quotes are just words until you really internalize them and apply the lessons they are trying to teach. The above four quotes or sayings are some of the only few that really have opened my eyes and shifted my perspective. I really believe that anything can be achieved whether it is by me or anyone else. Just outline your goals and take action to reach them. There are so many people out there reaching their wildest dreams, why not you?
